Description:

Born in Chicago in the 80's, and a far cry from the civilized quiet Tuesday afternoon readings in back corners of libraries that you may have in mind when someone says "poetry", a poetry slam is a rowdy competition where the emphasis is on performance, entertainment and audience participation. Five judges will be placed in the audience and will give you a score out of 10 based on audience reaction. Poets job is to win over the audience.

A poem can be whatever you want it to be – a story, a rant, a social commentary, a personal confession. It can be funny, sexy, bizarre, political, truth or complete BS, whatever – provided that you follow a few simple rules, explained below.

- Poems must be original material by the person who is performing
- Poets get 3 minutes at the microphone. Points deducted for going over time
- There will be two rounds. 12 poets in first round, 5 in second
- No instruments or props allowed. Costumes should be kept to a minimal
- Poems that attack others on basis of race, gender, religion, sexual orientation or any other form of discrimination will not be tolerated and you will be disqualified

The event will begin at 5pm on Friday evening at Couch Burners Camp – 5.00 and Florence. This will be a fun event and the audience is encouraged to participate. Feel free to bring shakers, clappers, bells, whistles and other noise makers.

So now I am just in need of poets to compete! Step up, bring your mad poetry skills and an attitude and see you if you can walk away with the title of Black Rock City Burning Slam Grand Champion (and hopefully some prizes that I’m trying to source). Send me an email if you’re interested in competing. [email protected] I’m also in need of judges, so let me know if you would like to involved that way.

See you on the Playa, where words become legends.

Peace
