Sticks & Stones: Words that Hurt, Words that Heal
Description:
Explore how words both hurt and heal in how we choose to claim our identity. There has been much ado lately in the media and in our lives around words like Tranny, bitch, dyke, slut, cunt, queer, gender queer, tranimal, pussy, fag, ratchet, diva, queen, king, and the list goes on. This workshop will explore what words we use to identify, where those words come from, how words impact us, how words can both hurt us and heal us. This is designed to be a workshop for people of all backgrounds. This workshop will be a safe space for people from all perspectives on these words and all identities to explore these words and the impact they have on us. This will be a time for people to share stories of hurt and sorrow, liberation and joy and to be seen and honored in these stories. The same word that hurts one, might heal another. In this space we request open hearts and minds as we dialogue about this sensitive topic of identity, oppression, reclaiming words, creating words, and living into what these words mean. All genders, races, classes, identities, bodies are welcome and honored always.
