CARYATID
Description:
This action art work utilizes BUTOH-inspired movement to envision an inert, architectural column, carved in the shape of a woman, come to life. Three sound tracks demonstrate the Kuleshov effect. Viewers will discover various interpretations of the movement with three different soundtracks, or observe the piece utilizing the haptic, environmental soundscape of the performance space.
This short piece is structured in three parts. The first part serves as an awakening, as the caryatid discovers movement from the perch of the entablature onto which it is mounted. The second part captures the caryatid’s realization of increased mobility, and the expansion of its sensate environment. The third part chronicles the caryatid’s awareness of its limitations, and the slow recognition of its inevitable embrace back to its native form.
