Description:

The box as art. Contemporary artists have used boxes in a variety of innovative ways. At face value, the box is a container: for shoes, clothes, a myriad of utilitarian purposes. In the hands of the artist, the box becomes a sculptural form. Inside and outside, the sculptural box is a container for place, memory, and emotion. This talk will provide a survey of how artists have successfully used boxes to create art and inspire attendees to create their own boxes fueled by their experiences in Black Rock City.

Speaker: Shimmera. Shimmera (aka Cheryl Patrice Derricotte in the default world) is a visual artist and her primary medium is glass. This is her 3rd trip home to Black Rock City and she is the guest visual arts instructor for the three-credit California Institute of Integral Studies’ class “Art and Survival: Radical Creation at Burning Man.
