Description:
From Jamaican shanty town dance halls to favela baile funk parties, speakeasies, at their best, have helped shape and enliven global culture. Sundowners once again honors the vibrant underground female-run shebeens of South Africa through a visual and narrative framework of Afrofuturism.
Our shebeen-styled camp features Afro-digital art and design, a dedicated daring dance floor, and a renegade-style sound system where rotating selectors play everything from African Jazz to Highlife to Nigerian Disco. Experienced instructors will teach the energetic Pantsula dance form, which began as a township expression of resistance to Apartheid before becoming a means of expression for all. Costumed hosts and animal puppets will keep the surprises coming and vibes high.
As the day ends, we cap off each soiree with a heart-melting South African Sundowner tradition of sharing stories, laughter, and drinks with friends old and new at dusk. This special cultural ritual was participated in by many of our founding crew while on life-changing conservation safaris themselves.
